A Beginner's Guide to the 7 Energy Centers (and How to Choose Your Candle)
Some days you feel scattered. Some days you can't find your words, or your heart feels a little closed off. Many wellness traditions describe these shifts through seven energy centers, often called chakras, that run from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
You don't need to be an expert to work with them. Think of each center as a feeling you'd like more of, and choosing one as setting an intention for your day. If you'd like the longer story of my own journey, start with Understanding Energy Centers.
What are the 7 energy centers?
"Chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word for "wheel." There are many in the tradition, but most people start with the seven that sit along the spine. Each one is traditionally associated with a quality, like feeling grounded or speaking clearly.
Working with them is a practice of attention and intention. It isn't medicine, and it doesn't need to be complicated. A scent, a few slow breaths and a simple sentence are enough to begin.
That's why we made the Centers Collection: a candle, soap bar and body oil for each energy center, hand-blended with organic essential oils in small batches here in Slippery Rock, PA.
The seven centers, one by one
1. Root: feeling grounded
At the base of the spine, Root is traditionally associated with grounding and belonging. Its candle blends vetiver, myrrh and frankincense: woody, earthy, resinous.
Intention: I am grounded. I am supported. I am home.
2. Sacral: feeling creative
Just below the navel, Sacral is traditionally associated with creativity, pleasure and flow. Its candle pairs Indian sandalwood and jasmine: warm, sweet, floral and spiced.
Intention: I welcome joy. I move with ease.
3. Solar Plexus: feeling sure of yourself
At the upper belly, Solar Plexus is traditionally associated with confidence and will. Its candle blends black pepper and cedarwood: warm, spicy, woody with a citrus lift.
Intention: I trust myself. I take the next step.
4. Heart: feeling open
At the center of the chest, Heart is traditionally associated with love, compassion and connection. Its candle pairs geranium, balsam and rose: floral, soft, green.
Intention: I give and receive love freely. I am kind to myself.
5. Throat: feeling clear
At the throat, this center is traditionally associated with expression and truth. Its candle blends blue tansy and peppermint: cool, minty, herbal.
Intention: I speak my truth with ease. I listen with care.
6. Third Eye: feeling reflective
Between the brows, Third Eye is traditionally associated with intuition and insight. Its candle pairs ylang ylang and pink lotus: floral, herbal, resinous.
Intention: I trust my inner knowing. I see clearly.
7. Crown: feeling present
At the top of the head, Crown is traditionally associated with connection and presence. Its candle blends lavender, lemon and sandalwood: floral, creamy wood, with a bright lemon note.
Intention: I am connected. I am open to what comes.

How to choose your candle
Start with the feeling you'd like more of this week, not the chakra name.
| If you'd like to feel... | Try | A good moment to light it | A gift for... |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steady and settled | Root | A busy season or a big change | Someone starting a new chapter |
| Playful and inspired | Sacral | Before a creative project | The maker in your life |
| Sure of yourself | Solar Plexus | The morning of a big day | A friend starting a new job |
| Soft and open | Heart | A slow Sunday | The friend who gives so much |
| Clear and heard | Throat | Before writing or a hard talk | The teacher, writer or speaker |
| Quiet and reflective | Third Eye | Journaling or meditation | The dreamer or journal-keeper |
| Calm and present | Crown | The last hour before bed | Someone who needs rest |
Still torn? Smell two and pick the one you keep coming back to. There's no wrong answer.
A five-minute evening candle ritual
- Set your candle somewhere quiet and put your phone aside.
- Take three slow breaths.
- Light the wick and say your center's intention, out loud or silently.
- Let it burn while you journal, stretch, or simply unwind.
- For a fuller evening, smooth a few drops of the matching body oil onto your wrists and shoulders after a warm bath.
Trim the wooden wick to about 1/4 inch before each lighting, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
Make it a set, or make it a gift
Each center shares one blend across the candle, the soap bar and the body oil, so the scent carries from bath to body to the quiet moment after. Choose a center for someone you love: Heart for the friend who gives so much, Root for someone starting a new chapter, Crown for the one who needs rest.
